Things to Know Before Buying Motorcycle: What to Compare Before You Commit

Buying a motorcycle is exciting. It is also a multi-year financial commitment that touches your daily routine, your safety, and your wallet long after the showroom shine wears off.

In our experience, the riders who stay happy with their purchase are the ones who compared properly before signing anything. Here is the checklist we walk customers through at TM Motoworld motorcycle shop — use it whether you buy from us or not.

The Checklist at a Glance

5Insurance typeChoosing third party on a financed bike
6New or used trade-offsBuying used without records

1. Know Your Real Budget, Not Just the Price Tag

The sticker price is the beginning. Before you commit, add up:

  1. On-the-road price, including registration, road tax, and first-year insurance
  2. Deposit — generally at least 10 percent for hire purchase
  3. Monthly instalment across the full tenure, and the total repayable amount
  4. Riding gear: a proper helmet at minimum, ideally gloves and a jacket
  5. Running costs: fuel, servicing, tyres, and annual insurance renewal

A useful rule: if the instalment plus estimated running costs exceeds what you can comfortably spare, size down. A bike you can afford to maintain properly will always serve you better than a bigger one you can only afford to ride.

Our motorcycle maintenance cost guide gives realistic annual figures to plug into that calculation.

2. Match the Bike to Your Licence Class

LicenceCoversWhat that means in practice
B2Up to 250ccThe class most riders hold; covers kapchai through 250cc
B1Up to 500ccOpens mid-weight machines
Full BAbove 500ccBig bike territory

If you hold a B2, your realistic shopping range is everything up to 250cc — which conveniently covers the majority of the Malaysian market.

3. Be Honest About How You Will Actually Ride

Not how you imagine riding. How you will ride, most days.

  1. Mostly city commuting under 20km a day: a 110cc to 150cc kapchai or scooter wins on cost and convenience
  2. Mixed city and highway: a 150cc to 250cc machine gives you flexibility
  3. Regular highway trips, pillion, or touring ambitions: prioritise the 250cc class for the power reserve

This is the most common crossroads Malaysian buyers face, and our 150cc vs 250cc comparison covers power, fuel, road tax, and running costs in detail.

4. Compare Financing on Total Cost, Not Monthly Payment

Most buyers finance through hire purchase at the dealership, which is convenient and accessible. Depending on your profile, a personal or koperasi loan can sometimes cost less overall — particularly for government servants with access to low koperasi rates.

The habit that saves money: always compare the total repayable amount, never the monthly instalment or the headline rate. Our motorcycle loan vs personal loan guide walks through the comparison step by step.

🧮 Run the numbers first. Use the TM Motoworld loan calculator to estimate instalments on any bike in our stock, then ask us for the full breakdown.

5. Budget for Insurance, and Choose the Right Type

Insurance is compulsory, and road tax cannot be renewed without it. The choice is between:

  1. Third party: cheapest, covers only damage you cause to others
  2. First party (comprehensive): covers other parties plus your own bike, including theft and fire

For a new bike, especially one under financing, comprehensive cover is strongly recommended — if the bike is written off while you still owe on it, third party leaves you paying for a machine you no longer have.

6. New or Used? Know the Trade-Offs

NewUsed
Upfront costHigherLower
WarrantyManufacturer warrantyUsually none
History riskZeroDepends entirely on records
DepreciationYou absorb first-owner dropAlready absorbed
FinancingFull supportAvailable, terms vary

If you go used, two things protect you more than anything else:

  1. Service history. Records verify mileage and reveal how the bike was treated. Our motorcycle service history guide shows what to check and when to walk away.
  2. Mileage in context. Learn what counts as high for the class you want in our mileage motorcycle and resale value guide.

Buying used from a dealer that inspects its own stock removes most of the risk of an unknown private seller.

7. Test Ride Before You Commit

A spec sheet cannot tell you whether the seat height suits you, whether the reach to the bars strains your wrists, or whether the engine character makes you smile.

Sit on every bike on your shortlist. Ride the finalists if you can. Check:

  1. Can you place both feet down confidently at a stop?
  2. Is the reach to the handlebars comfortable over distance?
  3. How does it behave at low speed, where you will spend most of your city time?
  4. Are the brakes confident and progressive?

8. Check Parts Support and Resale Value

A bike is easy to buy and sometimes hard to live with. Before committing, consider:

  1. Parts availability. Popular models from established brands mean cheaper, faster servicing anywhere in Malaysia
  2. Workshop network. Is there proper after-sales support reasonably near you?
  3. Resale value. Popular models hold value better, which lowers your true cost of ownership when you eventually upgrade motorcycle

9. Understand Everything Before You Sign

At the final step, slow down and confirm:

  1. The full on-the-road price and exactly what it includes
  2. The financing tenure, rate, and total repayable amount, in writing
  3. Warranty terms and the service schedule required to keep them valid
  4. Delivery timeline and what documents you need to bring

A good dealer will walk you through all of this without being asked.
